A Russian nesting doll, or matryoshka doll, is a hollow, wooden, lathe-shaped figure that splits horizontally, revealing a similar, smaller-sized figure inside. This second figurine itself contains another figurine, and so on. A series most often includes 5, 7 or 10 dolls but can go for large models up to 64. The word matryoshka is derived from the feminine first name Matriona, traditionally associated with a robust and generously shaped Russian country woman. We also sometimes speak of a nesting doll, in reference to the puppet of the Mother Gigogne, which represents a tall and strong woman surrounded by children. Dimensions: D10 x H20cm.
